How do you pick an e-liquid nicotine strength?

Match the strength to the device, not the other way around. High-strength nicotine salt liquids (25 to 50 mg/mL) belong in small, low-power pod systems; low-strength freebase liquids (3 to 6 mg/mL) belong in high-power sub-ohm tanks that produce far more vapor per puff. Crossing those wires is the single most common e-liquid mistake.

The two chemistries explain the split. Freebase nicotine is the classic form, and it gets progressively harsher as concentration rises, which is why nobody runs 50 mg freebase. Nicotine salts are nicotine bound with an acid, which smooths the throat feel at high concentrations, letting a tiny pod deliver a strong puff. The label tells you which you are holding; so does the number, since almost nothing above 20 mg/mL is freebase.

The units trip people up. "5%" and "50 mg/mL" are the same strength written two ways: percent times ten gives milligrams per milliliter. A 30 mL bottle of 3 mg freebase and a 10 mL bottle of 35 mg salt are radically different products in the same aisle.

Device power is the other half of the equation. A sub-ohm tank (coil resistance under 1 ohm) vaporizes several times more liquid per puff than a pod, so it multiplies whatever strength you feed it. That is the mechanical reason strong liquid in a powerful device is overwhelming and weak liquid in a small pod feels like nothing.
