What are amanita mushroom gummies?

They are edibles made with extract of Amanita muscaria, the red-capped, white-spotted mushroom, and their active compound is muscimol. That is a different molecule from psilocybin, the compound in what most people mean by "magic mushrooms," and the difference is exactly why one sits on a smoke shop shelf and the other does not: psilocybin remains federally scheduled, while Amanita muscaria is not.

The gummy format exists because of how this mushroom is prepared. Raw amanita contains ibotenic acid, which processors convert to muscimol during extraction; a finished gummy is the standardized end product of that process, dosed in milligrams of extract per piece and sold in counted packs. Labels state the extract amount per gummy, which is the number that actually distinguishes one product from another, more than flavor or brand.
