What is a 510 cartridge and what battery does it need?

510 is a thread standard, named for its original 5-millimeter, 10-thread spec, and it is why almost any cartridge screws onto almost any battery. What actually matters when pairing them is voltage: most oil cartridges run best between roughly 2.5 and 3.3 volts, and a battery cranked past that range is the usual culprit when a cart tastes scorched.

The cartridge itself is a small tank with a ceramic or cotton-wicked coil at its base, prefilled and sealed. Because the format is standardized, the differences that matter live inside: coil type, oil viscosity the cart is tuned for, and the hardware's build quality. The battery contributes exactly two things, power and fire control, which is why batteries are cheap relative to what goes on top of them.

Variable voltage is the one battery feature worth insisting on. Oils vaporize their flavor compounds, the terpenes, at lower temperatures than their base; a low setting around 2.5 V favors flavor, a higher setting toward 3.5 V favors vapor volume, and past 4 V most carts just burn. Batteries with a preheat function solve the other everyday annoyance, a clog after the cart sits, by warming the oil without a full-power pull.

Two practical checks save the most grief: store carts upright so oil does not settle into the airway, and snug the connection finger-tight only, since overtightening is the classic way to press the center pin down and kill contact. Like everything on the THC wall, carts and batteries sell 21 and over with ID, and what is in the oil is the label's and the COA's job to tell you.
